Paula Grammatikos

Paula Grammatikos obtained her master’s degree in Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience from Maastricht University. In April 2026, she joined the Cardiovascular Epidemiology group of the Julius Center (UMC Utrecht) as a PhD student, under the supervision of Ilonca Vaartjes and Erik Timmermans. Her research within the Exposome-NL project seeks to integrate the exposome into the risk-trigger-vulnerability model of ischemic stroke.

During her first year, Paula will be the UMC Utrecht representative of the Young Investigator Committee (YIC) within the Exposome-NL.

I hope to foster collaborations and produce research output that will contribute to our understanding of ischemic stroke, its complex etiology, and ultimately, to its prevention.

Decoding the exposome

The environment we live in has a dominant impact on our health. It explains an estimated seventy percent of the chronic disease burden. Where we live, what we eat, how much we exercise, the air we breathe and whom we associate with; all of these environmental factors play a role.
