Derek Karssenberg

Derek Karssenberg is Professor in Computational Geography, Department of Physical Geography, Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University. His group focuses on development of methods and software tools for spatio-temporal modelling of environmental factors, integrating process-based simulation and machine learning. He has expertise in mapping of environmental factors from regional to global scale as well as assessment of human exposures and data infrastructures for environmental factor and exposure data.

Derek contributed to the design of the Exposome-NL agent-based modelling projects investigating the use of simulation modelling for exposure assessment and evaluation of policy interventions. He is currently co-supervising PhD candidate Chiara Richardt in the COMPOSE project employing agent-based modelling of dietary habits.

I hope to contribute to improved assessment of the exposome through spatio-temporal simulation modelling.

Decoding the exposome

Decoding the exposome

The environment we live in has a dominant impact on our health. It explains an estimated seventy percent of the chronic disease burden. Where we live, what we eat, how much we exercise, the air we breathe and whom we associate with; all of these environmental factors play a role. The combination of these factors over the life course is called the exposome. There is general (scientific) consensus that understanding more about the exposome will help explain the current burden of disease and that it provides entry points for prevention and ...
