Alex Kurilshikov

Alex is een postdoc in de microbioom onderzoeksgroep aan het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen. Zijn team bestudeert de interacties tussen het humane microbioom en andere soorten humane 'omics'-gegevens om de mogelijke impact van de microbiota op de humane gezondheid te onderzoeken. 

Met behulp van data uit het LifeLines-DEEP population cohort hebben zij aangetoond dat het darmmicrobioom gevormd wordt door externe en intrinsieke factoren, zoals dieet, medicatie en ziekten (Zhernakova et al, Science, 2016). Alex richt zich nu op verdere analyse van de rol van het microbioom bij het vormgeven van het humane serummetabolisme, wat het belangrijkste element is in veel stofwisselingsstoornissen en hart- en vaatziekten.

De omgeving waarin we leven heeft een dominante invloed op onze gezondheid. Het verklaart naar schatting zeventig procent van de chronische ziektelast. Waar we wonen, wat we eten, hoeveel we bewegen, de lucht die we inademen en met wie we omgaan; al deze omgevingsfactoren spelen een rol.
